Nanoparticles
and
nanotechnology
has the
potential to
influence - and
is already
influencing - a
number of
products and
services.
Developments
have already led
to reductions in
the amount of
material needed
to make
products. Ultra
fine powders of
various metals
have been shown
to be 100
percent, 200
percent and even
as much as 300
percent harder
than the same
materials in
bulk form.
Because wear
resistance often
is dictated by
the hardness of
a metal, parts
made from ultra
fine powders
might last
significantly
longer than
conventional
parts.
Nanotechnology
will be a
success when
science is
translated into
products. In
order for that
day to come, the
business public
must be educated
to the benefits
of
nanotechnology,
which will lead
to a changing of
attitudes, "show
me and prove it
to me." In
short,
nanotechnology
will transform
society as
dramatically as
transistors and
computers have
over the past 40
years.
